Get to know Atty. Jon Eric Garde, the best immigration and defense lawyer in Nevada!

While most aspects of life around the world has slowed down, Atty. Jon Eric Garde, Esq., and his eponymous firm, JEG Law Ltd, continues to deliver the excellent services they are renowned for, without a hint of slowing down. He talks immigration, being the leader in Nevada for over two decades, and also about life and leisure!

Their law firm which boasts of almost three golden decades of experience and excellence is as busy as ever; Jon’s office is comprised of a superb administrative and accounting team, three full time paralegals, with their lovely receptionist also presently learning the ropes of paralegal duty, and managers who proactively lead in case intake including our very own, Geny Del Rosario, office manager and Filipino-American pride. She returns to Las Vegas from Alaska, and she has kindly facilitated this interview with Jon.

My interview with Atty. Jon Eric Garde was surprisingly pleasant; it was not how I usually wanted conduct as I feel that face-to-face interaction is always better, but given the present situation, we had to conduct a telephonic one that I promised Geny would not last more than 15 minutes, but given the wealth of insight and the passion that Jon shared, plus the delight I got from speaking with such a wise yet kind man, the hour and 3 minutes spent with Jon felt like only a minute!

Atty. Jon Eric Garde is the locus classicus of the ideal immigration attorney; someone with heart and compassion. The issue of immigration has truly become a daunting matter, and speaking as an immigrant myself, I saw that Jon was the immigration attorney that many immigrants need, especially those who can barely survive the vicissitudes of emigrating to the United States.

For one to truly be able to advocate for his clients, one must understand, even walk the path that his clients endured. While being born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Jon had and proudly worked as a carpenter until life led him to Central America, where he had seen for himself, the plight of the people living there. “Once when I was in El Salvador during the war, I actually saw cadavers at the back of the truck. One of the things I realized down there was that Americans have been selling to both sides; the guerillas also wielded M16, American armaments.” This was the impetus that then led John to return to New York City, where he took up law at the University of Buffalo, New York’s number 1 State University.

Afterwards, he moved to Las Vegas, where he first worked with the Lutheran Social Ministries Southwest, known to provide benefits for many immigrant communities in the Valley, prior to establishing JEG Law Ltd. And the rest, as you can say, is History.

He has a stellar record largely as an Immigration attorney, and among his most memorable triumph was that of a Lebanese Family who were facing removal from the USA and then eventually found a way to emigrate. Apart from Jon’s success in cases with clients facing deportation, he is also very well-versed in all aspects of immigration, especially in family and employment-based categories.

But more than just being a credentialed lawyer, he is also a great friend and father. Of his three children, he spoke of so much pride and delight. “My two daughters are very, very beautiful. My eldest works for Zappos, in the marketing department and she is married to a sports writer who is employed by the Vegas Golden Knights. My second daughter works as a nail technician and she is also a tattoo model, and she is just gorgeous.” Jon also adds that his two lovely daughters live in Las Vegas, while his only son, the youngest of his three children and who is only 21 years presently lives in Seattle, Washington, where he teaches music while working for a music store. He fondly shares, “my son is one of the most talented musicians you will ever meet. And he plays a lot of music instruments, guitars, and drums.”

Our conversation about his children, most especially his son led us back to their days together, when he would take him to various parks. When I asked Jon what outrageous thing would stand out of his bucket list, he chuckles, “I’d love to go to Angel’s Landing, in Zion National Park where I’d walk at the 4 feet wide ledge where one side is a 1,200 feet drop while the other is a 1,500 ft drop.” I joke with him that he’s an Angel indeed to the many clients he has helped and whose lives he had touched, but certainly we would not want him to be that kind of angel, one that drops on either side of the Angel’s Landing. But Jon Garde, ever-determined, proudly shares that he has become 40 pounds lighter now, and so he is definitely up for that challenge!

More about his lifestyle change, which really has helped him perform better, professionally, he avers, “I just woke up one day and decided that I wanted to live longer.” Indeed, this speaks of this man’s discipline and determination, regarding all the aspects of his life and being. “I try to eat healthy, mostly chicken and fish only; I try to stay away from fatty meats and I stick to brown rice, you can never make me eat white rice.” And if that’s not impressive, Jon also engages in serious training 4-5 times a week and has said that the lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic has certainly enabled him to stick to his fitness regimen better.

“But of course, I also love to indulge in good food. My favorite would probably be Thai food and with Filipino dishes, my favorite would be the fresh lumpia!”

Truly one who walks his talk, the illustrious founder and attorney at law of JEG Law reminds the community to start now; to do our part while we, together, bear the brunt in these unprecedented times while we await normalcy. “Act now, work with your head, work with all your heart, work 110% and always care for others. Remember to serve others in order to properly serve yourself. Let’s all rise hand in hand and all work together.”
